I learned about Sunshine Communities through The Blade’s 75th Anniversary coverage,” Judy recalls.

“I had heard of it before, but something about that story struck a chord. I didn’t have an appointment—I just walked up to the front door and asked, ‘How do I help?’” With no background in the field and no personal connection to developmental disabilities, Judy relied on a caregiver’s heart. That was all it took—she quickly became a beloved part of the Sunshine family.

Now, Judy is part of the rhythm in Room 2. Staff members say she brings calm energy, steady support, and a family-like presence. “You don’t need experience,” she insists. “You just need heart. The people here give back to me more than I ever could to them.” From puzzles and paper crafts to field trips and community events, Judy shows up with quiet consistency—proving that connection often lives in the smallest details.

"A smiling woman and man sit together working on a jigsaw puzzle. The woman, wearing a burgundy jacket, looks at the camera while the man, in glasses and a blue sweatshirt, holds a puzzle piece. A nearly completed puzzle with a tiger image is in front of them on the table, along with a ceramic owl mug."

“Volunteering at Sunshine gives me mental, physical, and emotional fulfillment,” Judy shares. “It gives you something meaningful to do—and you’re helping people who truly appreciate it.” She believes seniors and retirees have so much to offer and hopes more will step forward, whether by giving time, donating items, or simply showing up with compassion and an open heart.

“Judy makes Sunshine a better place because she’s so helpful and treats everyone like family,” says Amanda Outland, Volunteer Supervisor. “She’s become a big part of Room 2’s routine, and the staff look forward to the days she volunteers.”

Judy’s story is a heartening reminder that no matter your background, showing up with love and intention can create purpose, connection, and impact that lasts.
