"A triptych of three photographs featuring a man engaged in different activities. In the first image, a close-up captures him attentively looking at something off-camera while holding a piece of paper, dressed in a black sweater. The second image shows him walking on a wooden boardwalk in a lush green forest, wearing a black t-shirt and shorts, accompanied by a woman in a navy blue hoodie and jeans. The third image captures him leaning over a touch pool, wearing a striped blue polo shirt and a face mask pulled down, as he reaches out to interact with stingrays in the water."

A Life in Harmony: Jonathan’s Story

From the moment Jonathan wakes up to the moment he unwinds, music surrounds him. His old-school record player spins endlessly as he recites classics like 'Joy to the World' (commonly known as 'Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog') and 'The Brady Bunch' theme song, word for word. When staff members were asked to describe his superhero name, there was no doubt—he was Music Man.

But more important than music is the people in his life. “He never forgets those who have made an impact on him,” shares his mom, Marvene. His late father, sisters, nephews, and the dedicated staff at Sunshine Communities all hold a special place in his heart. And, of course, so do his favorite snacks: popcorn and hot chips (Cheetos).

Whenever we took him to the mall as a child, he had to have his box of popcorn," Marvene recalls. "Now, during every visit home, he asks us to make it for him. And he can’t leave for Vanderbilt without a bag of popcorn in hand."

A Home Meant to Be

Jonathan’s parents knew about Sunshine long before he was born; they were friends with its founders, the Englers, through their church. While he was connected to other agencies, Sunshine was always in the back of their minds.

At 21, it became his home.

Here, he thrives. His community-based home provides comfort and routine, while his Adult Day Program fills his afternoons with music, activities, and companionship.

From Spooky Boardwalk to Ice Cream Fridays, Jonathan lights up when he sees his Sunshine friends at campus activities.

And the pool? That’s his happiest place. Swimming every week isn’t just about the water—it’s about the experience, the connection, and sharing it with friends who love it just as much.

Faith and Family

Faith has always been a guiding force for Jonathan’s family. They currently attend Calvary Church and have always searched for a provider that would help keep him spiritually connected.

“That part was important—it mattered that he stayed connected to his faith,” his mom shares.

Jonathan remains close to his mom and sister, both of whom live nearby. When he’s home, he savors home-cooked meals—especially mac and cheese and spaghetti. He was especially close to his father, who supported him through every major transition in life.

“I admire the fact that he is so easy to love. He is kind-hearted and full of warmth. All he wants is for someone to give him time. He deserves to be part of his community," says his mom. And now, he most certainly is.”
