For over 75 years, Sunshine Communities has been dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Our founders had a simple promise: provide compassionate care with loving support. That promise has evolved into a legacy of progress, empowerment, and inclusion. Devin Hicks embodies that Sunshine promise.
Devin came to live at Sunshine at age 17. The move from his family’s home to Sunshine’s main campus was bittersweet, but he and his family found the support they needed. He recently graduated from the Pemberville Transition Program, a cutting-edge school that serves students with autism. Similar to other high school graduates, the next journey in Devin’s life has begun as he transitions into an emerging young adult. He is now part of Sunshine’s vocational program where services range from social, recreational, and therapy activities to small groups that venture into the community.

Using Sunshine’s transportation vehicles, Devin and his support staff enjoy his favorite activities such as bowling, exploring the library, and visiting local parks. Sunshine has begun using virtual reality (VR) technology to develop new skills through engaging programs. Devin and several others have been working with Sunshine’s Behavior Technician Department. Tommie M. is Devin’s behavior tech. Together, they have formed a special bond that involves using VR to enhance Devin’s life skills through fun. “My goal for Devin is to learn new capabilities that foster independence. We enjoy hanging out with each other so it’s never 'work' for either of us. He’s a great guy with a world of opportunity before him,” says Tommie.
In the past five months, Devin has progressed from using headphones to wearing the Oculus headset. He now associates movement of the handhelds with what he sees within the Oculus. Tommie’s goal is to help him build independence by making choices through selecting his favorite programs. Devin is also working on turning the system on, setting it up, and turning it off once his session is concluded, teaching him to complete tasks from start to finish. Through technology and Tommie’s expertise, Devin is progressing by learning skills for everyday life while minimizing behaviors. His future is one of promise.
